Tweet of the Day - 19 June 2013

Liane Dalziel finally confirms Christchurch's worst-kept secret:

This is, of course, a far cry from being "99% sure" that she WOULDN'T stand as recently as March this year. But circumstances change, and Ms Dalziel's hat is now in the mayoral ring.

We do however see the irony of another comment made by Ms Dalziel a month ago as reported by Stuff:

Last month she was still coy on a bid, but talked about the importance of an alternative council leadership that cut across political party lines.
She said at the time that she would consider standing if she got the "right" team behind her, but admitted it was likely to include candidates from the Left-leaning People's Choice movement.

Quite how a former Labour MP and Minister becoming mayor will "cut across political party lines" is beyond us. If anything, Ms Dalziel's election would entrench party political involvement in local body politics.

We do however wish her well for her campaign. Bob Parker has a formidable opponent, and that is healthy for local democracy.
