An excellent choice

New Zealand Cricket is poised to make an excellent appointment; Stuff reports:

Bruce Edgar is set to be unveiled as New Zealand Cricket national selection manager this week.
Sir Richard Hadlee led the appointment panel to replace controversial Australian Kim Littlejohn, who was shown the door at the end of his contract.
While New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White was reluctant to confirm specifics yesterday, the Sunday Star-Times understands Edgar has got the job.
"We've got a preferred candidate," White said. "We're still working through some detail. We're not in a position to confirm that yet. Once we've completed the contract we hope to announce that next week."
Edgar is on a family holiday in Britain and could not be reached for comment but he has relocated from Sydney to Auckland.
The former opening batsman is a respected figure in New Zealand cricket, having played 39 tests and 64 one-day internationals between 1978/86. He also worked as a high-performance batting coaching with Cricket New South Wales and Sydney club Gordon.
The Star-Times understands Edgar is considered an astute thinker and his imminent appointment has the approval of Black Caps coach Mike Hesson, who will retain the final say around selection, and key stakeholders.
The position is thought to allow Edgar to continue his work as a financial services consultant, and will also lead to the reinstatement of two national selection scouts. Former internationals Martin Crowe and Glenn Turner previously filled those positions.
"We had some interest. It's quite a unique position," White said. "It's a narrow field in terms of skill set but we're very happy with the preferred candidate we've got." 

Bruce Edgar was one of the unsung heroes of the fine New Zealand cricket team of the early 1980's. A dogged left-hand batsman, he put a huge price on his wicket, and although he wasn't always pretty to watch, he did what an opening batsman is supposed to do; wear down the opposition bowlers.

If Bruce Edgar can impart that same mentality into the current New Zealand top order, his appointment will prove to be an inspired one.
