Chris "Tom" Martin has been one of New Zealand cricket's most faithful servants. But he has today announced his retirement from all cricket, at the age of 38; The Blackcaps website reports:
BLACKCAPS and Auckland Aces fast bowler Chris Martin announced his retirement from all forms of cricket today. The 38 year-old played 71 Tests, 20 One-Day Internationals and six International Twenty20s for New Zealand after making his Test debut against South Africa in 2000.He retires as New Zealand’s third highest Test wicket taker with 233 dismissals.
“It feels like the right time to step down. I have loved every second and given it everything when playing for the BLACKCAPS, but after 15 years of professional cricket, it’s time to pursue a new challenge,” said Martin.
“I want to thank my family, all those at New Zealand Cricket, Auckland Cricket and Canterbury Cricket for their help and support over the years.
“Wearing the silver fern has brought me a huge amount of pride and will be something I’ll always cherish. Representing the BLACKCAPS has been a massive privilege, and playing with a group of guys who’re so passionate about doing well for their country has been very special. I wish Brendon and the team all the best for the future.”
A late bloomer, Chris Martin has played a key role in some on New Zealand's best results in the last few years; none moreso than the victory against Australia at Hobart in 2011. He has been an absolute warrior, but Father Time, the guardian of the pavilion at Lord's has said "enough".
Until the current crop of seam bowlers emerged over the last season or two, "Tom" Martin had often been the mainstay of the New Zealand attack. His lack of batting ability is legend as well, but it has never been through a lack of effort.
Enjoy your retirement "Tom"; it is richly earned.
