Lydia Ko; golfing superstar

Lydia Ko has confirmed her status as the most promising young women's golfer on the planet. She has retained her Canadian Open at the Royal Mayfair course in Edmonton, Alberta.

Ko took the tournament by the scruff of the neck today, with a blistering five under par 30 on the front nine at Royal Mayfair to take a grip on the event. Two birdies and a bogey on the closing round gave her a final round 64, and a five-shot victory.

We'll have more on the wonderful Lydia Ko story shortly; the tournament has only just ended. But this is a truly remarkable performance by a remarkable young woman who is going to become an absolute golfing superstar.

UPDATE: The CN Canadian Open was not just your run-of-the-mill LPGA event. 96 of the top 100 female golfers in the world were playing; this was an absolutely top-class field.

And a measure of her dominance at Royal Mayfair was Lydia Ko's final round; a six-under 64. The next best score on the day was a three-under 67 by the runner-up, Karine Ichner from France. No other player of the 74 who made the cut went better than two-under in the fourth round. Ms Ichner will be happy though, as she will collect the $300,000 winner's purse due to Ko's amateur status.

Lydia Ko went out today and won the tournament playing some sublime golf that belies her age. A huge career beckons when whe finally turns professional, and there are signs that  a decision on that may not be too far away. Lydia Ko now has five wins in professional tournaments, and has never missed a cut in 22 professional events. She has already forfeited prizemoney in the region of $US 1 million.

We salute Lydia Ko. She is quite simply amazing.
